The Casita

Find peace and quiet, beautiful scenery, birds and other wildlife in abundance here.  In this thoughtfully appointed Casita, effort has been made to anticipate your every need in advance of your arrival. We respect your privacy and aim to be attentive to your needs, but not intrusive.

There is a three-night minimum during peak birding season from March 1 through September 15, excepting the month of June (two-night minimum in June), and a two-night minimum from September 16 through the end of February. Please note: Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property.

2017 Rates: First two nights: $150/night, all taxes included.  3rd through 7th nights:  $120/night, all taxes included. Use of the photo blind is included in the room rate.  Prices are subject to change.

2018 Rates: First two nights: $175/night, all taxes included.  3rd through 7th nights: $150/night, all taxes included.  Use of the photo blind is included in the room rate.

Ask about rates for long-term/TDY stays. Above rates are for single or double occupancy.
Additional people: Adult $50/night; child $35/night.
Room Limit: Three adults or two adults and two children.

Amenities:  The straw-bale Casita is our sole rental unit.  The spacious room with private bath contains two beds (one queen-sized, and one extra-long twin), kitchenette, and dining table and chairs.  

  • The kitchenette has a microwave, toaster, coffee grinder, coffee maker, electric frying pan, electric kettle, under-the-counter (small) refrigerator with freezer and ice maker, dishes, utensils, and the normal condiments. There is a small charcoal grill on the patio. Charcoal is provided. You may bring food for other meals, but please note that additional refrigerator/freezer space is limited.  There are three major-chain grocery stores in Sierra Vista,  only 11 miles away, and many excellent restaurants nearby.
  • Breakfast is self-catered, and freshly stocked just prior to your arrival: fresh fruit, whole-grain bread, english muffins, eggs, cold and hot cereals, coffees, teas, juice, and 2% milk. Please let us know in advance if you are vegan, or require a different type of milk (e.g., non-dairy or lactose free) or gluten-free bread.
  • An installed reverse-osmosis system provides pure, good-tasting water for ice and drinking.
  • Electric heat, excellent insulation and cross-ventilation, and a ceiling fan keep the room comfortable in all seasons.  There is no air conditioning.
  • The large bathroom has a shower stall (no tub). Hair dryer, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner are provided.
  • This is Wi-Fi hot spot (DSL).
  •  There is no television or land line phone in the Casita.
  • Nighttime wildlife viewing (gray fox, ringtail, elf owl, etc., may be possible in season from the back porch of the main house.
  • Nearby is the southern terminus of the Arizona Trail, an 800+ mile recreation trail from Mexico to Utah. Many other hiking trails are only a short drive away.

Reservations:  Deposits may be made to Mary Jo Ballator or Ash Canyon Bed & Breakfast by check, traveller’s cheque, money order, or bank bill-pay.  We do not take credit cards.  A deposit of 50% of the total reservation must be received within 10 days from when the reservation is made.

Cancellation Policy: For peak birding season (March through mid-September), your deposit, less a $50 cancellation fee, will be returned if you cancel at least 30 days prior to your arrival date.   For the remainder of the year, we will refund your deposit less $50 cancellation fee if canceled at least 14 days prior to your arrival date.  If you prefer, you may opt to apply your deposit to a future stay, subject to availability.

Arrival and Departure: Guests may check in between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m.  Checkout is at 10:00 a.m., unless prior arrangements have been made.  Travelers’ cheques, personal checks, money orders, or cash will be accepted at checkout for the remaining balance on your account.   

Children: No children under 12.

Pets: Pets are not permitted due to allergy considerations for future guests. Local boarding kennels are listed in the Sierra Vista phone book or on the Internet.

Gift Certificates/Special Occasions: We have certificates available for any dollar amount or number of overnights.   Upon receipt of payment, we will send the gift certificate to you or to the recipient. We are happy to help with arrangements for special occasions.

Environmental: We do not use pesticides or herbicides anywhere, inside or out.  Insects and other wild creatures are a normal part of rural life.  You should expect to see wildlife of all shapes and sizes on the property.  We recycle and compost whenever possible.  Please let us know in advance if you have environmental sensitivities.

Photography: High-speed photography set-ups away from the public (feeding) areas are permitted to overnight guests only and are included in the room fee. If you require feeders to be set up in advance of your arrival, please arrange this with Mary Jo well in advance.  There are some photographic props available, such as various perches, but you are responsible for any plants and flowers you may need. Flowers from the garden may not be picked to use as props.
